The Tony Kerigan Memorial Prize

Inspired by the legacy of a beloved CPL Member, we have created the Tony Kerigan Memorial Prize to encourage ethical reflection within our Canadian Physicians for Life community.

Healthcare practitioners (in training, active, or retired) are eligible to submit an ethical case for discussion by our conference’s expert panel. The purpose of such cases is to help practitioners think through difficult ethical situations using philosophical principles and practical wisdom.

In submitting your case, please follow this general structure:

  1. Setting the Scene: Present the clinical scenario with relevant details and describe the dilemma/decision point clearly
  2. Mapping the Ethical Landscape: Identify the key ethical principles/values in tension, name what’s at stake for different parties
  3. Thinking It Through: Work through the ethical reasoning, address strongest objections to your position, apply ethical principles to the specific case
  4. Making a Judgment: Offer your considered judgment, explain your reasoning, acknowledge trade-offs, suggest what specific actions this judgment entails
  5. Propose Further Inquiry: Discuss further questions that might deserve exploration and how your thinking might apply in a different but related situation

Winning criteria:

  • Real-world complexity
  • Relevance to the conference theme
  • Application of pro-life principles
  • Robust ethical and clinical judgment

The top cases will be discussed by our expert panel on November 8, 2026. The winning case will be awarded the Tony Kerigan Memorial Prize and a $500 cash prize.

To submit your case before the deadline of September 8th, please click here.
