Canadian Physicians for Life’s

2007 Medical Students Forum

In conjunction with

The International Symposium on Euthanasia and Assisted Suicide

Friday, Nov. 30 – Sunday, Dec. 2, 2007
Four Points at Sheraton Toronto Airport Hotel
Mississauga, Ontario

Canadian Physicians for Life will be holding this year’s Medical Students Forum in Toronto, Nov. 30- Dec. 2. Pro-life medical students and residents who are interested in deepening their understanding of the life issues and who want to acquire the knowledge, the skills, and the courage to defend the pro-life ethic in the medical profession are invited to apply for sponsorship to attend this event (application form in PDF/Word format).

We are encouraging students to take advantage of this opportunity to meet physicians and other medical students from across the country who value the right to life of all human beings, to learn from highly qualified professionals in medicine, law, and ethics, to engage in lively and thought-provoking discussions, and of course to forge new relationships.

Attendees to this year's Medical Students Forum will take part in the Euthanasia Symposium for one full day (Friday, Dec. 1). On Saturday and Sunday, CPL will hold its own conference across the hall from the Euthanasia conference. These sessions will focus on abortion and reproductive health. (See Preliminary Program)

Our last Medical Students Forum in Montreal in 2005 was a great success, and we are pleased to be able to, once again, help sponsor a limited number of pro-life medical students and residents to attend our 2007 event.

Here’s what some medical students had to say about our 2005 Medical Students Forum…

“We were able to learn valuable information at the conference that is not presented to us elsewhere in our medical education, and as a result we are better equipped to approach the pro-life issues we will face throughout our training.” (Student from University of Saskatchewan)

“…at the end of the conference I was an inspired medical student strengthened with the testimonies of practicing pro-life doctors who hold the tools to be able to talk about these issues with students, patients, and future colleagues. More than ever before I now feel that the pro-life stance is very defendable.” (Student from University of Alberta)

“Discussing these issues with other pro-life students made me realize again how valuable the conference was. They, like I, were galvanized by the conference to act on their belief of the intrinsic value of life. Thank you so much for sponsoring me. It changed the way that I will practice.” (Student from UBC)

What is included in sponsorship?

Canadian Physicians for Life will sponsor as many medical students/residents to attend this event as possible, depending on our financial situation. We will pay for most of the costs involved for students and approximately half the cost for residents, based on the information below:

Canadian Physicians for Life will pay for:

  • Shared accommodation at the Four Points at Sheraton Toronto Airport Hotel
  • All conference fees
  • Friday lunch and dinner; Saturday breakfast, lunch, and dinner; Sunday breakfast
  • A maximum allowance for air/train/bus/car travel, depending on where person is traveling from. If the fare is less than the maximum allowance, CPL will pay the amount of the fare. Travel allowance for students is as follows:
  - Vancouver $500
  - Edmonton $450
  - Calgary $450
  - Regina $500
  - Saskatoon $500
  - Winnipeg $350
  - London $250
  - Hamilton $50
  - Toronto $25
  - Kingston $250
  - Ottawa $250
  - Montreal $250
  - Halifax $350
  - St. John's $500

Allowance for residents is half the amount quoted for students.

If the city you are traveling from is not on the above list, please contact our office.

Students will be required to pay for the following:

  • The portion of the travel fare over the maximum allowance. Students accepted for sponsorship will be responsible for booking and paying for their flights (or other means of transportation) and will be reimbursed up to the maximum allowance upon arriving at the conference in Toronto. Students are encouraged to be on the lookout for seat sales which can reduce the cost of a flight considerably. Seat sales come and go all the time, so vigilance is recommended in order to get the best deal possible. You can check flight schedules and fares and book online for WestJet and AirCanada at www.westjet.com and www.aircanada.com. If you are travelling by train, you can book your travel at www.viarail.com.
  • Friday breakfast; Sunday lunch
  • Any other expenses you might incur, such as phone calls from hotel room, etc.

Application Deadline Extended:

Completed applications should be received in our office by October 23 2007.
